Special Session Agenda for
the rest of us!
The emergency is here. Trump’s chaos puts all of us in danger. We do need a special legislative session to address the crisis, but not – as the governor is proposing – for tax giveaways to corporations and increasing expenses of jails and prisons.
I’ve spoken out and organized against the Hollywood Handout. And since I’m running for governor, you deserve to know not just what I’m against, but what I am for – what I propose to protect seniors and working people’s lives in these tyrannical times.
Here’s how I’d create jobs, protect seniors, and support families and our most vulnerable:
Jobs
- Fix our streets, starting with school zone safety projects – kids getting hit crossing in school zones is an emergency on its own, and road work creates good jobs
- Protect driving jobs, and keep our streets safe, by outlawing AI/self-driving vehicles (speaking of school safety, these vehicles don’t recognize school buses and kids)
- Build affordable housing, creating good jobs that help people permanently transition out of being unhoused
- Raise minimum wage for large employers so they pay a living wage, small businesses are competitive, and billionaire corporations aren’t adding to our Medicaid and public services costs
- Small business supports grants from Governor’s Office of Economic Development
- Stop giveaways: 18-month pause on out-of-state corporate abatements – these “sugar-high” temporary jobs aren’t worth giving away the money to pay teachers and firefighters down the line
- Fund additional apprenticeship grants for equipment and facilities
Affordability for seniors and families
- Freeze rent and residential electricity rate increases for 18 months
- Affordable Food and Medicine: backfill healthcare, food aid, and other federal funding cuts (including to tribal nations) and improve Medicaid reimbursement rates
- Fast track certifications for fields like medicine and teaching
- Improve the housing market for families; cap corporate home ownership
- Protect the environment; permanently end tax abatements for data centers
- Make college affordable; offer a state loan program with built-in forgiveness for public service
- Increase bonding authority for affordable senior housing
- Affordable childcare: expand support for this and broaden it to home-based centers
Public safety and crime prevention
- Hire enough public safety officers to enforce the laws we have now, instead of laying off workers and keeping positions vacant
- Mobilize the National Guard to support community food service needs, not immigration
- Protect personal information; strengthen laws and enforcement to prevent the state from sharing personal information without a court order
How I propose to pay for it
- Bezos Tax: Stop commercial electric vehicles from literally free riding on the roads the rest of us pay for
- Elon Tax: Millionaire capital gains excise tax
- Tap the rainy day fund
- Implement a digital sales tax: Anything you’d pay tax on at a local business should be taxed the same online
- Reset depreciation when properties are sold
- Raise rates on Wall Street landlords
- Eliminate the live entertainment tax loophole
I would love to massively improve education as well, but, among other things, depreciation needs to be gotten rid of before we can tackle something that big. We can take the first step to ending depreciation now.
I recognize that this would be a massive and unprecedented special legislative session agenda. These are dangerous times, and we need to fight in bigger and different ways than ever before.
Also, many of these policies have been proposed by a few brave legislators in past legislative sessions and discussed in depth. Some passed and were vetoed by Governor Lombardo, while others never moved forward. If I were governor, I would push for them now and do everything I possibly could to help seniors and families.
